Project

This individual project was a website redesign for the Gainesville Police Department (www.gainesvillepd.org).

  • Client: Gainesville Police Department (the professor)

  • Project Type: Individual Coursework

  • Timeline: January - February 2012

  • Deliverables: Expert Review, Site Map, Workflow, Wireframes, Final Report

  • Tools: Google Analytics, OpenOffice Draw, Balsamiq

Process

Scope and Expert Review. I defined the project goals, primary user, and deliverables based on the goals listed on the department's website. Then, I reviewed various areas of the site such as information architecture, navigation, content, and page layout. For each area, I provided my findings and recommendation.

Site Map. I created a site map for the current site and used Google Analytics to develop a new site map.

Workflow. Using OpenOffice Draw, I developed a standardized workflow for submitting various forms through the site.

Wireframes. After developing the site map and workflow, I created Balsamiq wireframes depicting new navigation and page layouts.

Result

Outcome. Elements of my design (2012) has been incorporated into the current site design (2014). These elements include the use of mega menus and a rotating feature story section on the home page.

Lessons Learned.

  • Use Google Analytics data when access to users is limited.

  • Annotate low-fidelity wireframes to provide insight on design decisions.
